Obituary for Van Franklin

Van Franklin, 79, of Hwy 212, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017.

Van was born November 9, 1937 in Madison County to his late parents, Furman and Agnes Chandler Franklin. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church where he also served as a Deacon. Van retired from Magnavox in Greeneville, TN after working for 39 years. He was currently employed with the Madison County Solid Waste Department as a collection site greeter. Other positions he held over the many years were as a nursing home healthcare inspector for Madison County, a lifelong farmer and sawmill owner and operator. Van was no stranger to hard work and he especially enjoyed supervising all things. He loved spending time with his family, farming, hunting, fishing and socializing with all his many friends throughout the area. Van never met a stranger or missed an opportunity to make a new friend no matter where he went or visited. He was eager to seek out new connections to promote his deer hunting and his grandchildren's endeavors. His legacy will be in the many conversations and tales that were told over his lifetime and the family he leaves behind.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty-two years, Doris Cutshall Franklin who passed on March 16, 2005, and two sisters, Valerie Horton and Shirley Fender.

Van was the loving father of Sandy McDevitt and her husband, Ricky of Marshall and Van Steven Franklin and his wife, Carolyn of Mars Hill; beloved grandfather of Tyler and Jonathon McDevitt both of Marshall, Buddy and Tanner Franklin (Peyton Powell), and Samantha (Robert) Taffer all of Mars Hill. He is also survived by siblings, Slowly (Bea) Franklin and Mary (Gary) Brooks, of Marshall. Also, Laura Mae (Jeter) Lewis, Linda Gail (Dallas) King, and Andy Franklin, all of Fletcher. He leaves behind many nieces, and nephews.
