Obituary for Ralph Lewis

Ralph Lewis, 89, of Enka, went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, August 5th, 2017, at his home. He has resided in Enka for the past 57 years.
Ralph was born April 25, 1928 in Madison County as the seventh son of Benjamin Harrison Lewis who was also a seventh son. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Imogene Rice Lewis; parents, Benjamin Harrison and Cora Rice Lewis; and six brothers, Ervin, Russell, Clarence, Blanco, Marion and Paul.
Ralph was a member of Easter Gap Baptist Church and was the founding member of the original bluegrass gospel group, “Land of the Sky Boys”. He was raised in a musical family with his brothers, who were already established musicians. Ralph became an electrician at an early age and wired many of the homes in Madison County. He joined the Navy in 1951 and his naval career included re-commissioning the USS Hancock in San Diego and serving as a musician in his band, The Hancock Ramblers. He attended his 70th Navel Reunion in 2016 where he performed for his shipmates. After the Navy he resided in Detroit, Michigan where he performed with the Sauceman Brothers and several other talented musicians from Western North Carolina. He was employed in the Auto Industry before moving back to Marshall, NC to start Madison County’s first heating and cooling business. Ralph and his family moved to the Enka area where he established Lewis Refrigeration Company, which has serviced businesses in the Asheville area for over 58 years. Ralphs musical career was always part of his life and took him around the world with Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys in the 70’s, after which he returned to play musical dates in Western North Carolina with his two sons, Marty and Don, in the widely loved band, Sons of Ralph. He had lifelong musical and professional friends.
Ralph is survived by two daughters, Welynn Lewis Allbach and husband, David, and Sherry Lewis Morgan and husband, Shannon; two sons, Marty and Don Lewis; four grandchildren, Laurie Allbach Williams and husband, Corey, Jonathan Allbach and wife, Jamie, Amanda Morgan Bacon and husband, Justin, and Patric Morgan; nine great-grandchildren, Creighton Lewis Williams, Carleigh Wisch Williams, Cleo Sophia Williams, Zora Jane Allbach, Isabel June Allbach, Zoe Grace Bacon, Charle Jane Bacon, Penelope DeLane Bacon and Rhenn Michael Bacon; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 2017 in the Chapel of Madison Funeral Services. Private funeral services will held be at a later date. Burial will follow in the Lewis Cemetery.
