MARSHALL – James Clay Coates, 87, of Marshall passed away Sunday, Jan. 3rd, 2010.
Mr. Coates was born October 1, 1922 in Madison County where he had lived all of his life. He was a member of Grapevine Baptist Church and a vender at the North Asheville Tailgate Market. James was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. and Kate Bryan Coates; sister, Betty Jean Boone and brothers, Wayne, Hassel, Jack, William and Arnold Coates.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Kathleen Hensley Coates; daughters, Judy Ann Fray (Jack) of Madison, VA, Janice Lounsbury (James) of Marshall and Amelia MacNichol (Scott) of Marlton, N.J.; son, Craig Coates (Tori) of Byron, GA.; grandchildren, Dana Campbell (Mark), Jamie Lounsbury (Stephanie), Christopher and Carolina MacNichol and Danielle and Shannon Coates; great grandchildren, Hayden and Daniel Campbell, Brenna and Caden Lounsbury and Dakota Hoskinson; sisters, Robbie Wallin (Kindred) and Lois Tweed (Sherman).
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6th in the Chapel of Madison Funeral Home with the Reverends Danny Jenkins and Tommy Lipe officiating, Military Rites conducted by the Mars Hill VFW, Post 5483 will follow the service here in the chapel.
Interment will follow at 2 p.m., in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.
